Rats

Rattus norvegicus

How to Identify

– Look for large droppings near burrows and bins.
– Find greasy run paths along walls outside.
– Check for holes or burrow entrances near foundations.
– Hear thumping or chewing in crawlspaces at night.

Health Risks

Transmit rat-bite fever, leptospirosis, and salmonellosis; ectoparasites (fleas, mites) on rats serve as secondary disease vectors; gnaw damage to structural elements and wiring is extensive. Rats can pass germs that make people sick. Their bites and waste are both a risk. The fleas and mites they carry spread germs too. They also chew through wood and wires in the home.

Rats can spread disease through droppings and urine. They also chew wires and ruin insulation in attics.

Our Treatment Method

Snap traps and tamper-resistant bait stations along runways and burrow entrances; exterior burrow fumigation or tracking powder for burrow populations; exclusion after reduction. Traps and bait boxes go where rats travel. Outdoor burrows get treated to clear the nest. Bait boxes are sealed to keep pets safe. Once numbers drop, gaps are sealed to lock them out.

We set snap traps and tamper-proof bait boxes. We seal burrows and fix gaps after removal.

Prevention Tips

– Seal foundation gaps, crawlspace vents, and drain openings with heavy-gauge wire mesh.

– Keep dumpsters and outdoor bins sealed and elevated where possible.

– Eliminate yard debris, dense ground cover, and compost piles near the structure.

– Fix leaking pipes and exterior water sources that attract rats.

– Use tamper-resistant bait stations rather than open bait — protects pets and wildlife.

– Keep trash sealed and bins away from walls.

– Remove dense ground cover and trim vines near foundation.

– Block holes with heavy wire mesh and cement.

– Fix leaks and standing water that lure rats.

Habitat & Behavior

Burrows underground near foundations, dumpsters, and along waterways; also nests in crawlspaces and lower wall voids; stays closer to ground level than roof rats; requires gap of approximately 19mm for entry. Norway rats dig burrows near foundations and trash. They like spots close to the ground. Crawlspaces and low wall gaps make good nests. They need only a small hole to get inside.

Local Prevalence

Rats are common near Austin water and dumpsters. They nest near foundations and low crawlspaces.
