Rodents & Wildlife Year-round

Rodents

Rodentia spp.

How to Identify

– Look for small droppings along baseboards and shelves.
– Check for gnaw marks on wires and boxes.
– Find tunnels or burrows near foundations outside.
– Listen for scratching in walls or attic at night.

Health Risks

Transmit Salmonella, leptospirosis, and hantavirus via urine, droppings, and bites; shed allergens linked to asthma; chew electrical wiring, plumbing, and insulation causing fire and structural damage. Rodents can spread germs through their droppings and urine. They dirty the food and surfaces they touch. Their waste can make asthma worse. They chew wires, which can start a fire.

Mice and rats can spread germs in homes. They also chew wires, making fire risks in attics.

Our Treatment Method

Integrated rodent management: seal all entry points (exclusion), snap traps or tamper-resistant bait stations inside, perimeter bait stations outside; sanitation improvements to remove food sources. Sealing every gap is the first big step. Traps and bait stations cut the numbers down. Bait boxes outside catch them before they enter. Cleaning up food sources stops them from coming back.

We trap and bait outside runways then seal entry points. We follow up to keep homes mouse or rat free.

Prevention Tips

– Seal all gaps larger than a dime on exterior walls, foundations, and utility penetrations.

– Store food — including pet food — in sealed metal or heavy-plastic containers.

– Keep garbage in lidded bins and clean up spills and crumbs promptly.

– Trim vegetation and remove clutter that provides shelter within 3 feet of the home.

– Inspect attic, crawlspace, and garage regularly for droppings or gnaw marks.

– Seal gaps bigger than a dime around the home.

– Store pet food in metal or sealed bins.

– Keep yard clutter and woodpiles away from foundation.

– Trim plants and remove ground cover near walls.

Habitat & Behavior

Highly adaptable; nest in wall voids, attics, crawlspaces, and underground burrows; opportunistically enter structures through gaps as small as a dime (mice) or a quarter (rats). Rodents nest in walls, attics, and crawlspaces. They squeeze through very small gaps to get in. They come looking for food, water, and warmth. Once inside, they breed fast and spread out.

Local Prevalence

Mice and rats are common in Austin homes. They move in come fall as nights grow cool.
