Scorpions

Centruroides sculpturatus

How to Identify

– Look for pale, curling shapes at night with black light.
– Check shoes and boots before putting them on.
– Find small sting marks and pain after contact.

Health Risks

The most venomous scorpion in North America; sting causes severe pain, numbness, and in children or immunocompromised individuals can produce systemic neurotoxicity requiring antivenin; all other US species produce only localized pain and swelling. This kind of scorpion has the strongest sting in the region. A sting brings sharp pain and numb skin. Young children are most at risk and may need care. Most other scorpions cause only mild pain and swelling.

Most scorpions give only local pain in Austin. Young children or allergic people may need care.

Our Treatment Method

Perimeter residual spray with UV black-light inspection at night for detection; seal all cracks and entry points; reduce harborage material (bark, rocks, debris) adjacent to structure. A pro treats around the home and checks at night. A black light makes scorpions glow and easy to find. Sealing cracks keeps them from getting inside. Clearing bark and rock piles removes their hiding spots.

We treat the outside base and seal entry cracks. We perform night checks with a black light when needed.

Habitat & Behavior

Rocky terrain, desert scrub, and urban/suburban homes in arid climates; hides in cracks, under bark, inside shoes, and in wall voids; excellent climber — found on ceilings and in attic spaces. Scorpions hide in cracks, under bark, and in shoes. They are most active at night. They are good climbers and can reach ceilings. Dry, rocky yards near the home draw them in.

Local Prevalence
