Carpenter Ants

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

How to Identify

– Look for large black ants near damaged wood.
– Find sawdust-like frass near baseboards or eaves.
– Watch for winged swarmers in spring after rain.

Health Risks

Do not sting but can bite; excavate galleries in structural wood, weakening beams and framing over time — less rapid than termites but cumulative damage can be significant. Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They dig through it to make nests. Over time these tunnels can weaken beams and framing. The damage builds up slowly, so it is easy to miss. A bite may pinch, but it is not dangerous to people.

They do not bite often, but they chew wood. Over time they can weaken beams in Austin homes.

Our Treatment Method

Locate and treat parent colony with residual dust or non-repellent liquid; address moisture source driving infestation; perimeter bait application for outdoor forager control. A pro tracks the ants back to the main nest. Treating that nest is the key to real control. Fixing the leak or damp wood removes what drew them in. Bait around the home then catches the ants still foraging outside.

We find the parent nest and treat it directly. We also fix water leaks that draw them in.

Prevention Tips

– Eliminate moisture issues — repair roof leaks, condensation, and plumbing drips promptly.

– Trim tree branches and shrubs away from rooflines and siding.

– Store firewood off the ground and away from the house exterior.

– Seal exterior gaps, utility penetrations, and door/window frames with caulk.

– Replace any rotted or water-damaged wood before ants establish galleries.

– Repair roof leaks and clear clogged gutters fast.

– Keep woodpiles away from the house side.

– Replace rotted siding and window frames early.

– Trim shrubs away from walls and rooflines.

Habitat & Behavior

Moist or decayed wood in wall voids, roof eaves, window frames, and hollow doors; satellite colonies often located in dry structural wood adjacent to a moisture-damaged parent colony outdoors. They love wood that is already damp or starting to rot. Wall voids, roof edges, and window frames are common spots. They often nest near a leak or a water-damaged board. Many homes have one main nest plus smaller satellite nests inside.

Local Prevalence

Carpenter-ants show up in Austin where wood is damp. They nest in rotted eaves, decks, and wall voids.
