Mice

Mus musculus

How to Identify

– Look for tiny droppings in cabinets and drawers.
– Find chewed cardboard and nibble marks on food.
– Check behind appliances for run marks and nests.
– Hear squeaks and scurrying at night in walls.

Health Risks

Urine and droppings contaminate food and surfaces with Salmonella and leptospirosis; shed allergens trigger asthma attacks; gnaw behavior damages wiring, creating fire risk. Mice leave droppings on food and counters. Those droppings can carry germs that make you sick. Their dander can set off asthma in some people. They also chew wires, which can spark a fire.

Mice spread germs via droppings and urine. Their droppings can trigger asthma in kids.

Our Treatment Method

Snap traps baited with peanut butter placed along walls and runways; seal all entry points after population reduction; tamper-resistant bait stations for ongoing perimeter control. Traps work best set against walls where mice run. Peanut butter makes good, simple bait. Once the mice are gone, every gap gets sealed. Bait boxes outside keep new mice from coming in.

We set snap traps along runways and walls. Then we seal gaps to stop new mice.

– Place snap traps along walls and behind appliances where mice travel.

– Remove clutter and cardboard from garage and basement to eliminate nesting material.

– Seal pencil-sized gaps with steel wool and caulk.

– Store food in sealed glass or metal jars.

– Keep garages and attics neat and dry.

– Check attic in late winter for early signs.

Habitat & Behavior

Nests in wall voids, kitchen cabinets, and insulated pipes; home range is small (10–30 feet from nest); enters through gaps as small as 6mm (roughly the diameter of a pencil). Mice breed quickly; one female can produce dozens of young a year. A small problem grows fast when food and shelter are easy to reach.

Local Prevalence

Mice are common in Austin year round. They enter tight gaps to reach food and warmth.
