Spiders

Araneae spp.

How to Identify

– Look for cobwebs in corners and storage areas.
– Find round egg sacs tucked in boxes.
– Watch for shiny, black round bodies under eaves.
– Check shoes and gloves before wearing them.

Health Risks

Most US house spiders are harmless to humans; medically significant species include the black widow (Latrodectus spp.) with neurotoxic venom and the brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) with necrotic venom; bites from these species require prompt medical attention. Most spiders you see are shy and try to avoid people. A bite is rare and usually causes only mild swelling. Watch any bite that gets worse, and see a doctor if you feel unwell.

Most spiders here are harmless to people. Still, black widow bites need urgent care in Austin.

Our Treatment Method

Reduce prey insect populations (spiders follow food); residual perimeter and interior spray to contact and deter; web removal to discourage harborage; sticky traps for monitoring. A pro clears the webs and treats around the outside of the home. Cutting down the insects spiders eat removes their main food source. Fewer bugs in and around the house means fewer spiders over time.

We remove webs and treat hiding spots with spray. We check woodpiles and storage areas near houses.

Prevention Tips

– Seal cracks, gaps, and utility penetrations to block entry from outside.

– Reduce clutter in basements, garages, and storage areas where spiders hide.

– Shake out shoes, gloves, and clothing stored in low-traffic areas before wearing.

– Install yellow or sodium vapor exterior lighting to reduce flying insect attraction.

– Wear gloves when working in woodpiles, sheds, or other undisturbed spaces.

– Keep storage areas dry and well lit.

– Shake out shoes and clothes before use.

– Move woodpiles away from your home wall.

– Seal gaps around windows and door frames.

Habitat & Behavior

Corners, basements, garages, window frames, and undisturbed storage areas; most species build webs near light sources that attract flying insect prey. They like calm, quiet spots that people rarely disturb. A steady supply of insects keeps them in one area. Most spiders stay close to where they can catch food. Cluttered storage and stacked boxes give them plenty of cover.

Local Prevalence

House spiders are common in Austin basements and garages. Black widows and recluse hide in out-of-the-way spots sometimes.
